Alibaba’s Cainiao aiming for next-day delivery service in 50 cities

Alibaba’s logistics affiliate Cainiao is aiming to offer next-day deliveries in 50 cities across China by the end of this year. The company currently offers a next-day delivery service in 34 cities.

Judy Tong, the president of Cainiao, revealed the plans in a presentation to Cainiao’s logistics and delivery partners yesterday (Thursday, 28 May).

Alibaba’s principal rival in the Chinese e-commerce market, JD.com, currently offers a same-day delivery service in more than 40 cities. A straight comparison can be misleading, however, as JD.com operates its own logistics service, whereas Alibaba works with third-party providers.

Tong also warned the delivery partners that Cainiao was intent on maintaining, and raising standards, and would not tolerate courier companies engaging in activities such as “brushing” (there is where a seller will generate fake orders to inflate their sales volume and raise their profile, and the courier will collude with the seller and sometimes deliver empty boxes).
