Ceska posta won't be sold in current govt's term
The current government will not sell postal services operator Ceska posta into private hands in its term of office, Minister without Portfolio Vladimir Mlynar told reporters today.
As of January, Ceska posta will fall under the newly established Ministry for Information Technology to be led by Mlynar.
Mlynar said the government will most probably complete the planned transformation of Ceska posta into a joint-stock company.
While competition functions well in the provision of commercial postal services, the government, as the founder of the joint-stock company, will press for it to improve also the services on which it has a monopoly.
Mlynar would like Ceska posta’s post offices in the future to become the key contact points for people’s electronic communication with the authorities.
Ceska posta operates 3,400 post offices. The previous government of Prime Minister Milos Zeman failed to approve the proposal for Ceska posta’s transformation into a joint-stock company.
Ten other companies providing selected postal services are operating on the Czech market.
