DHL veteran to spearhead Xpress' global drive

SPEED printer Xpress Holdings, in an effort to inject greater professionalism into the once family-run company, has hired former senior DHL Express executive Poh Eng Seng to spearhead its global expansion plans.

Mr Poh, a DHL veteran of 17 years and who is now director of strategic planning and business development, will be responsible for charting the strategic business development plan for the group’s pre-press and printing services, and enhance its distribution network and logistics management systems, a company statement said.

DHL strengthens network in India

The best part of the facility, says Chandrasekhar Pitre, head, marketing, DHL Express India, is that from the moment of checking-in till despatch the package need not touch the ground. The conveyor belt system allows for this, adds Pitre.

The facility is equipped with weighing dimensional labelling machine for weighing, radio frequency scanners, powered conveyer belts and other machinery. It has next-generation data scanners for data transfer from anywhere in Bangalore, and access controlled movement among others.

Cathay wants a cargo hub to call home

Cathay wants to build its own self- handling cargo terminal at Hong Kong International Airport, with as much as 2.5 million tons of capacity by 2009 and 5 million tons by 2018. This would be the world’s largest cargo terminal.

But Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals is loath to lose the client, which, with Cathay’s subsidiary Dragonair, uses 43 percent of the cargo company’s facilities at the airport now.

Both companies are awaiting a decision by Hong Kong’s airport authority.

TNT's contrarian view

While other express carriers have built airfreight networks with numerous international flights, TNT is keeping its eyes on the ground. The Dutch integrated carrier is establishing a domestic ground network based on the acquisition of a large Chinese parcel and logistics operator, Hoau Logistics Group.

Hoau, established in 1995 and based in Heilongjiang, has more than 1,100 depots in China, along with more than 3,000 trucks and 12,000 employees. This gives TNT a huge footprint in the world’s favorite growth market, but it is not an express network, admitted Marie Christine Lombard, managing director of TNT Express.
