Swedish Posten using RFID

The Swedish postal service Posten is using embedded radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in parcels to cut down on internal theft. Posten, which has its headquarters in Stockholm, is testing the technology on high-value and confidential items such as mobile phones, computer equipment and government documents, as a way of detecting whether they have been tampered with. Specially-designed cardboard packaging from Swedish technology firm Cypak contains a microscopic chip and embedded RFID circuits that can store information about the package’s origin, contents and journey. Posten uses RFID readers to enter data into the SecurePak parcel before dispatch, and then reads the data when the package has arrived at its destination to check for any suspicious activity.

Posten reported net sales grew 2 percent to SEK 25,120, operating earnings increased SEK 1,269m to SEK 991m and after-tax earnings improved by SEK 1,458m to SEK 1,225m. President and CEO Erik Olsson commented: Posten’s 2004 net earnings improved considerably year over year, driven mainly by higher revenues and substantial cost reductions. The bottom line is the proof that our organization was able to demonstrate crucial flexibility during a period marked by far-reaching changes and major cutbacks. Fierce competition and electronic substitution have eroded mail volumes, weighing on Posten’s largest business area, messaging services. Demand for Posten’s logistics and direct mail services continues to rise. In addition to solid financials, Posten is also pleased to report an uptick in customer confidence.
