Business Post keen to expand

Business Post is planning further growth in its letters division to handle unsorted mail after announcing a steady rise in turnover across its various delivery operations. The mail delivery company yesterday reported a rise in group pre-tax profit to Pounds 20m for the year to March 31 compared with Pounds 18.7m a year earlier. Turnover increased 21 per cent to Pounds 233.3m.
Paul Carvell, chief executive, said he expected the company to meet forecasts of a 25 per cent increase in profit for the coming year. Business Post was increasing sales in part by packaging together its different services for big customers, particularly those in the electronics and computer sectors, Mr Carvell added.

UK Mail posts small profit

Royal Mail is losing 250m letters a year to its new upstart competitor UK Mail.
Business Post, the courier company that launched UK Mail 12 months ago to deliver post and packages for utilities and banks to their customers, said today that the fledgling business is ahead of targets and is already turning a small profit. Business Post founder and chairman Peter Kane said UK Mail had turned over GBP10m in its first trading year to 31 March, and had grasped 1% of the corporate postal market. ‘We are encouraged by the prospects for UK Mail which remains on track for 3% market share by the end of its third year,’ said Kane.

UK Postal Services: Doors open on mail

The postal landscape is changing as Royal Mail finally steps aside to let new operators through. Postal deregulation has been on the cards for years but is finally starting to happen. Some banks and utilities are switching to competitors of Royal Mail, a vote of confidence that could encourage other volume mailers to follow. Full liberalisation was originally set for April 2007, with a staggered schedule that would give Royal Mail time to overcome its financial problems before facing the competition. However, thanks to the company’s rapid recovery, the government was recently able to bring the date forward to the beginning of next year. In practice much has depended on Royal Mail opening up its delivery network to competitors, as it is difficult for new entrants to set up an infrastructure from scratch. That has been a problem, postal experts say, as until recently it showed reluctance to do so.

Business Post is delivering earlier

Business Post’s letter delivery division, which competes with Royal Mail in the partially liberalised UK postal market, is set to break even during its first year of trading, ahead of expectations. UK Mail is handling the equivalent of 250 million items a year following its launch last May and has almost 1 per cent of the market, Business Post said in a trading update. The service was set up by Business Post after Postcomm, the industry regulator, gave companies the right to enter the letters delivery market in 2003. The division’s progress will enable it to break even for the year to March 31, instead of incurring a small loss as previously expected.
