Cuba halts US service

Cuba has indefinitely halted all mail to the United States, the operator has announced. Via a state television announcement on Friday, Correos de Cuba said that “until further notice, we cannot continue to accept any type of delivery”.

The statement added that this was “the result of new security measures imposed on the aviation authorities of the United States to all countries in the world.”

Letters and postcards are included in the embargo, according to the operator’s announcement.

An initial ban was put in place in November, after US authorities increased security measures following the mailing of explosives from Yemen last year.

Correos de Cuba also said it will not accept any shipments destined for the United States at its network of post offices.

Mail deliveries between the two countries were suspended in 1963, shortly after Fidel Castro took office. The service resumed in 2009, with mail being routed through third party countries to its final destination.
