La Poste: ‘contrat de plan’ could be extended (La Poste : le contrat de plan pourrait etre proroge)

The ‘contrat de plan’ signed in 1998 by French post office La Poste, which fixes the relationship between the State and the public operator, runs out on 1 January 2002. Several sources indicate that the government is not opposed to signing a six month extension to the contract, which would take it beyond the presidential elections, or even up to the end of 2002. The objective would be to avoid restarting the debate during an election campaign.
Taking into account the application of the 35 hour working week, the introduction of the euro and the management’s project to reorganise La Poste’s activities into branches, there are several issues which could turn La Poste into an election issue.
