Officeworks and Fastway team up to launch Mailman parcel service

Australian office products retailer Officeworks has entered the parcel delivery business with the launch of its new service, Mailman. Established in 2007, Officeworks is Australia’s leading retailer and supplier of office products, with a national network of more than 150 stores.

In launching the Mailman service, Officeworks has teamed up with courier company Fastway, which has a network of around 700 franchisees across Australia, delivering about 20 million parcels a year.

Mailman customers will post their parcels from the drop-off points inside Officeworks’ stores. They will weigh and measure their own parcels using equipment available in store, and purchase pre-paid labels or print their own labels online.

There will be flat-rate pricing for all Australian destinations, with free track and trace and signature on delivery. If recipients are not available, they can collect from the nearest Officeworks store or Fastway depot.

Users will be given the option to drop off parcels weighing up to 10 kilos after business hours, seven days a week.

Costs will range from AUD11 for parcels up to 1kg, up to AUD20 for 10kg packages.

Officeworks merchandise marketing director David Haydon commented: “We already have one of the largest ranges of mail products, like boxes, packaging and bubble wrap, so it makes sense to extend to parcel delivery.

“What consumers want is hassle-free service where they don’t have to waste time queuing, can buy multiple labels in advance, and prices are transparent.”

Haydon said that Mailman would offer the lowest flat-rate prices on “like for like” parcels. Officeworks estimates that it could be up to 20% cheaper than major rivals for some destinations and parcel types.

Officeworks anticipates that the Mailman service will appeal to small to medium businesses, online sellers and consumers sending packages to family and friends.

In “Metro Delivery areas” which are close to Officeworks’ warehouses, Mailman will offer faster delivery times, with same-day and next-day options. These areas currently include Brisbane, Melbourne, Geelong, Perth and Sydney.
