Lynx celebrates successful year
Nuneaton’s Lynx Express is celebrating one of its most successful years to date and is looking forward to matching that progress in 2003.
As well as expanding its contract base, the company, based on Bermuda Park industrial estate, was also recognised with two major industry awards.
Chief Executive David Burtenshaw said “Our business has had one of its busiest years ever in 2002, culminating in record parcels volumes through our Nuneaton hub.
“New contract gains with JJB Sports, Redcats and John Deere, to name just a few, have increased our share of the UK parcels market over the last 12 months.
“Internationally our market position was recognised by two industry awards, Express Operator of the Year, and for innovation.
“Our business to the USA grew by 100 per cent and we have established an increased presence in Holland, Belgium and Germany.
“Investment in developing our people has become an increasing focus for us. Training managers of the future, increasing our supply of qualified drivers and giving staff the opportunity to further their education have all been the subject of successful initiatives in 2002.
“Our training department was also recognised with a national award this year.
“Even though the overall economy could have been better in 2002, Lynx has gone from strength to strength. It is a team effort involving more than 4,000 people that has generated this level of success and we are proud of our achievements.
“The year ahead holds mainly new challenges and opportunities for Lynx. Congestion charging will bring a challenge, but on the other hand the deregulation of mail services will create new markets for us. From our Nuneaton base, Lynx will continue to compete on the global stage and increasingly build its reputation as a leader in the market for express delivery service.”
In 2002, Lynx Express clinched a pounds 30 million-plus contract from one of Europe’s fastest-growing mail-order groups. The five-year deal with Redcats, formerly Empire Stores, was won by Lynx after a two-year study by the home delivery firm.
Redcats is the mail-order division of PPR, a French group, which has expanded dramatically over the past 12 years to become one of the world’s top distribution companies.
The company won the prestigious International Express Operator prize at the freighting industry’s annual awards ceremony.
Britain’s largest independent parcels carrier beat off strong competition from the likes of DHL, Parceline and TNT, cementing its reputation as a force to be reckoned with on the world stage.
Lynx picked up the award for its “textbook” example of how to make international alliances work, with both its transatlantic services and its increasing presence in Europe.
