Poste Italiane helps pave the way for the delivery of electronic postmarks

Poste Italiane’s Director General, Massimo Sarmi introduced an application to enable Posts the world over to deliver electronic postal certification marks.

The plug-in developed by Poste Italiane with the help of Microsoft applies an electronic postal certification mark that provides evidential proof of an electronic event, in a certain form, at a certain time, and involving one or more parties. This certification mark can be seen as the electronic equivalent of a registered letter. It brings all the benefits of the traditional paper-based postmark to electronic documents. Features such as date and time stamping, digital identity capture, content verification and encryption prove that the content of an electronic message has not been altered. The electronic postal certification mark acts as evidence of who signed what and when.

The Advanced Electronic Services user group, part of the UPU’s Telematics Cooperative (an association of UPU member countries that work together to develop technical applications for the benefit of the postal world), and countries currently using electronic postmarks also contributed their expertise to the project. These include Belgium, Canada, France, Italy, Portugal and the United States.

With this application, the UPU will work to provide member countries wishing to offer electronic postal certification marks the necessary infrastructure to do so.

Magazines Canada makes recommendations to Canada Post review panel

A delegation of representatives from Magazines Canada met with the Canada Post strategic review panel in Toronto to provide six recommendations on what the crown corporation should to do to strengthen its relationship with and improve services for the Canadian magazine industry.

– There should be a “postal contract” between Canada Post and the Federal Government to clarify the crown corporation’s roles and responsibilities.
– An independent regulator should be created to ensure compliance with the “postal – contract” and provide for arbitration of disputes.
– Lettermail rates should rise with actual delivery costs.
– Rate increases should be transparent, timely and predictable.
– Competition should be introduced in magazine delivery.
– istance-related pricing should be put on hold pending the panel’s report.
The delegation also pointed out two key characteristics that make Canada’s magazine industry and mail services unique:

The size of Canada’s landmass relative to the small and dispersed population.
Competition from American magazines due to our proximity to the world’s largest exporter of magazines.

Magazines Canada will submit comprehensive proposal to Canada Post in September. This will also go out to Magazines Canada members.

The Canada Post panel will complete its review in December 2008.

Canada Post gets new marketing leader

Canada Post has appointed Stewart Bacon as its first chief sales and marketing officer.

The new role is a “statement about the importance of customers and serving customers” and was created to help ensure that customer relations are properly managed, said Bacon.

Canada Post employs approximately 70,000, 90 pct of which are involved in mail delivery, and “in the minds of many employees, the customer was not front and centre,” said Bacon, who adds that this is a problem Canada Post is attempting to rectify.

Bacon hopes to increase the relevance of “our postal business to both businesses and consumers,” and to make sure “people continue to think that getting mail delivered to you is the best way to get communications.”

Bacon will oversee approximately 1,400 employees in the customer service department, billing and accounts receivable, sales department and call centres in Winnipeg, Ottawa and Fredericton. He will report to Canada Post president and CEO, Moya Greene.

Bacon worked in sales and marketing at IBM and Philips Electronics in Montreal, before joining Canada Post as regional vice-president in 1994.

Last week, VANOC and Canada Post also announced that Canada Post has been named an official supplier for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
