Quebecor World Logistics First in Industry to Run Mixed Class Co-Mail to Help Customers Reduce Postal Costs

Quebecor World Logistics is the first in the industry to offer its customers mixed-class co-mail that combines Periodical and Standard class mail pieces into a single offline co-mail offering. This gives our customers improved flexibility of a pool but also the industry’s quickest turn-around time, unattainable in a single class co-mail run. The mixed-class, short-run pool conducted at Quebecor World Logistics’ Bolingbrook, IL co-mail facility will now become part of QWL’s superior co-mail process, creating enhanced value to Quebecor World’s quality print product.

Customers using Quebecor World Logistics’ mixed class co-mail solutions in combination with additional mailing optimization programs are able to realize savings on their overall mailing costs while improving delivery times.

In May of 2007, Quebecor World announced the expansion of its co-mail platform into the Northeast with two new 30-pocket machines. In addition, QWL entered into an exclusive two-year purchase agreement with SIM Products Co. for two 30-pocket co-mail machines and secured the option to purchase the next four machines produced by SIM.

Little known Canada Post program to prevent junk mail from arriving finally gets promoted

When you get home, do you pick up the stack of junk mail in your mail box and throw it right into the recycling bin?

Most of us do. And many of us wish they wouldn’t send us this stuff.

But very few of us knew that Canada Post has had a program in place for the past 10 years that allows Canadians to notify the post office that they do not want junk mail delivered to them. The Straight’s Sindy Zelezen heard about the program on the CBC.

A Vancouver businesswoman is now promoting it out of her own company’s funds and has started the Red Dot Campaign Web site.

Whether you’re irritated at having to deal with junk mail, or you want to save the environment, or both, just follow the simple instructions and you can stop the endless flow of junk mail.

Talk about stopping the insanity!

PostNet becomes Canada Post authorized business centre

Canada Post and PostNet announce their channel partnership to provide better service to the Canadian small business market. Effective January 21, 2008 authorized business centers will be established in PostNet stores offering a complete selection of Canada Post’s shipping services.

“Resources that were previously available only to large corporations are now available to small businesses through their local PostNet,” said Rob Anderson, President of PostNet Canada. “This relationship enables PostNet to offer its complete selection of printing services, complemented by Canada Post’s shipping services.”

In a CAD 5.6 billion (USD 5.5 billion) market for shipping and courier services, increased through the rise of online shopping, PostNet provides a complete printing and shipping service to the small- and medium-sized business owner. PostNet’s end-to-end services include: in-house graphic design, digital printing, copying, packaging, and courier service, and with the addition of the Canada Post relationship now has vast mailing and shipping methods at its disposal. PostNet Canada plans to expand to more than 300 franchises across the country.

“Canada Post’s selection of PostNet to create this relationship signifies the confidence Canada Post has in PostNet’s small business value proposition. It confirms Canada Post’s commitment to work together with PostNet, leveraging our strengths, for the purpose of better serving our mutual and new small business customers,” said Louis O’Brien, Senior Vice-President, Canada Post Parcels. “Canada Post believes the result will be significant new revenue growth for both companies, a stronger presence in the small business market and most importantly, better served Canadian small business customers.”

Canada Post: Judge OKs class action suit over postal charges

Canada Post could be required to return tens of millions of dollars in shipping charges to thousands of businesses as a result of a recent Ontario court ruling.

Superior Court Justice Joan Lax certified a class-action proceeding initiated by Ottawa-based Lee Valley Tools Ltd., which has been embroiled in a long-running dispute with the Crown corporation about its charges for shipping parcels to customers.

The ruling noted there are more than 57,000 commercial clients that could have a claim against Canada Post, if its billing practices for parcels are found to violate the federal Weights and Measures Act.

For the past seven years, Canada Post has charged customers to ship parcels based on the greater charge of the actual weight or the “volumetric weight” of an item. This is so that the charges on lightweight yet bulky items cover the cost of transportation.

Since 2003, the Crown corporation has used a device known as a “cubiscan,” which Lee Valley has alleged can overstate the volume of objects, especially irregularly shaped parcels, by as much as 20 per cent.

Commercial clients are required to pre-pay and weigh their products and if Canada Post determines that the total was underestimated, it levies an addition charge. Until January 2007, it did not refund any overpayments to customers.

John Caines, a spokesman for Canada Post, described the class-action certification as a “procedural” ruling. “We deal with all of our customers fairly and in the same way,” Mr. Caines said. “This is the way the industry measures parcels.” He added that Canada Post is the only company now issuing credits for overpayments.

Enforcement of the Weights and Measures Act is the responsibility of Measurement Canada, part of Industry Canada. Alan Johnston, president of Measurement Canada, responded in December 2005 that the relevant section of the Act did not define a “proscribed limit of error” for shipping charges, so it could not be enforced.
