DHL launches Indian ‘Rakhi Express’ service

Sisters can now send ‘rakhis’ to their brothers living overseas, along with a box of kumkum, some rice, a letter and a gift at a discount of 50 per cent, thanks to a new service by world’s leading logistics firm DHL.
The ‘Rakhi Express’ service is available from August 9 to 29 and “is designed to bridge the distance between families across countries,” DHL said.
The DHL Rakhi Express service is timed to coincide with this year’s ‘Raksha Bandhan’, the festival that celebrates sisters’ love for their brothers.

DHL plans Chinese cargo center

DHL Worldwide plans to build an express cargo center at Guangzhou Airport in southern China in addition to its USD100 million newly opened hub in Hong Kong, the global courier said on Wednesday. “We chose the Pearl River Delta for our hub, and Hong Kong is the best option,” John Mullen, DHL’s chief executive officer for Asia Pacific, told reporters before an opening ceremony for its new facility at Hong Kong’s airport.

Courier services look to China to expand coverage

Companies in the U.S. are facing mature markets at home and are increasingly looking to the Chinese market to grow and remain competitive globally. According to FedEX, U.S. exports to China have grown by 75 percent over the past three years making the United States second only to Japan as China’s top trading partner. And European exports to China are also growing steadily.

DHL was the first international air express company to enter China in 1980, followed by FedEX in 1984, and UPS in 2000.

DHL’s partner Sinotrans is a licensed customs broker, covering 300 cities through 11 major gateways with about 37 percent of China’s market. In 2003, they invested USD200 million in China for a five-year program.

DHL sees rise in Asia-Pacific market share

DHL has said it expected its expand its 40 percent share of the Asia-Pacific express courier market by one-to-two percentage points in the next few years, fuelled by growth in China. DHL, a unit of Deutsche Post AG, earned about 2.5 billion euros in revenue from its express and logistics businesses in Asia last year, about 11 percent of DHL’s total global turnover.

“We are getting 20 to 25 percent growth in Japan. But China is twice as fast as that,” DHL Express chief executive John Mullen told a news conference.
Mullen said revenue at DHL’s China express have grown 35 to 45 percent annually over the last five years.

DHL sees express logistics market share in Asia growing 1-2 pct annually

DHL said it expects its share in Asia Pacific’s express logistics market to grow at a steady rate of 1-2 pct in the next few years, mainly due to its China operations. ‘At the moment, we believe we are taking 1-2 pct market share a year (from our competitors) and we expect that to continue for the next few years,’ said DHL Express Chief Executive Officer for Asia Pacific John Mullen.

Mullen said the company’s share of the Asia Pacific express logistics market currently stands at about 40 pct with FedEX having a 29 pct market share and UPS and TNT Express with 19 pct and 12 pct, respectively.
