UK Business Post shares plummet by 14%

Shares in Business Post fell 14 per cent yesterday after the mail delivery group issued its fourth profit warning within 12 months after failing to improve margins at its core business. The UK’s fourth-largest mail operator said full-year pre-tax profit would be about Pounds 9m after margins at itsparcel services business – which accounts for 70 per cent of turnover – had failed to pick up. Guy Buswell, the new chief executive, said the company had lost “quite a few customers” over the past 12 months through lack of service and a sales force motivated to sell only to bigger customers.

Business Post trading statement

The Board of Business Post announces that it now expects pre-tax profits for the full year to 31 March 2006 to be substantially below last year’s. This in part reflects a reduced expectation of normal trading for Express, the UK business-to-business parcel delivery service. The Board has also identified additional costs, amounting to approximately GBP3m in the current year, for supporting the franchise network, and has decided to make a GBP3.2m provision against amounts owed by certain franchises relating to prior years. Excluding the one-off provision, the year-on-year reduction in pre-tax profit to 31 March 2006 is expected to be around 10%.

An Post to recruit new chief executive as Curtin departs

An Post is looking for a new chief executive following confirmation by Donal Curtin that he will leave his post in July. Mr Curtin (58) will depart at the end of a turbulent three-year contract agreed with An Post back in 2003. “It was always the case in relation to my role that it was to be for a recovery programme,” Mr Curtin said. The State company will now launch a recruitment campaign to fill the position. “In six months time that recovery programme will be implemented. There is a foundation there, the company is financially stable and the job now is to introduce long- term change.” He said that the new chief executive would have to make a “career type” commitment to the position as a five-year programme or strategy was now required.

UPS launches Mail Logic, an international mail service

Today UPS announces the launch of UPS Mail LogicSM, a new international mail service that allows customers to streamline their mail operations by relying on UPS’s package delivery expertise. With UPS Mail Logic, businesses can simply gather their international letters, flats or packets into one parcel – no sorting by destination, metering or stamping necessary. Customers arrange for UPS pick-up along with any other small packages ready for delivery. UPS then transports the international mail to well-respected postal service entities that sort and ship the mail to the destination postal authority or other licensed party for final delivery. The launch follows a successful Mail Logic pilot programme initiated in the UK in January 2005. The success of the seven month programme, which was made available to businesses of all sizes, has prompted UPS to roll out the new service first to The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France, with additional European markets to follow.
