Fedex Express to cease Kaohsiung cargo flight services

FedEx Express, will close its Kaohsiung air cargo transportation line July 27 after 12 years of service, according to the company’s branch office at the Kaohsiung International Airport.

Despite of the closure, the company stressed that their cargo transportation services in the southern Taiwan region will not be affected, and that their southern Taiwan posts will continue to receive orders.

FedEx opened the Kaohsiung route Sept. 4, 1995, with its cargo aircraft plying the route from the southern port city to Subic Bay in the Philippines via Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in northern Taiwan five times per week.

However, according to corporate sources, cargo loads are limited at the Kaohsiung airport. Besides, Taiwan’s two largest airlines — the China Airlines and EVA Airways — also operate cargo flights out of the airport and reach many of the same destinations in Southeast Asia.

FedEx executives stationed at the airport confirmed the decision to cease Kaohsiung cargo flight operations, but declined to explain why.

Renamed Taiwan Post announces speedier delivery

The newly renamed Taiwan Post Co announced yesterday that it had launched a same-day delivery service within Taipei City with the ability to deliver letters and packages within two or three hours.

The new service began yesterday and will initially only deliver to residents of Zhongzheng District, Datong District, Zhongshan District, Songshan District, Daan District, Wanghua District and Xinyi District.

In addition to normal letters and packages, customers can send urgent documents and product samples via the new service.

Postage will be determined by the weight of the letters or packages.

Frank Hung, deputy director of the Taiwan Post’s Taipei branch, said yesterday that customers could get a full refund if their letter or package failed to arrive at its destination within the three hour time limit assuming the Taiwan Post was to blame for the delay.

Hung said that the new service was in a trial phase.

Taiwan Post will consider expanding the service to other major metropolitan areas, including Taichung and Kaohsiung, if the service is successful, he said.

The minimum delivery charge is NTD64 (USD2) for letters or packages weighing under 250g.

The postal company already provides four-hour delivery in Taipei City, Taipei County and Keelung City.

DHL adds new Asia Pacific flights direct to New York

DHL, the express delivery and logistics company, today announced the introduction of five new direct overnight flights from key Asia Pacific markets directly into DHL’s International Gateway located at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The new flights will increase the air capacity of DHL’s global transportation network by eight tons daily, enhancing DHL’s ability to serve current and new customers along the fast-growing U.S.-Asia Pacific trade lane.

DHL’s new flights to New York’s JFK Airport consist of two daily direct flights from DHL’s Central Asia Hub in Hong Kong, and one direct flight each from DHL’s hubs in Bangkok, Thailand; Singapore; and Taipei, Taiwan.

In 2004, the Asia Pacific-U.S. trade lane accounted for USD 533 billion in exports to the U.S. The new direct DHL flights to New York significantly increase cargo capacity on air routes from Asia Pacific to the U.S. East coast to meet customer demand, and underscore DHL’s ongoing commitment to providing the most extensive international air express network for customers throughout Asia Pacific and the U.S. With the addition of these new flights, DHL customers will also benefit from enhanced next day express services to the U.S. using DHL International Document Service and DHL Worldwide Priority Express; later cut-off times, and earlier delivery times for shipments originating in Asia Pacific and destined for the greater New York/New Jersey area.
