Hermes to meet e-commerce demand with mass recruitment

As part of a £100 million investment programme, Hermes UK has announced it is looking to hire more than 10,500 staff, reports Apex Insight.

The programme will involve taking on 1,500 fully employed staff including some at its head office in Yorkshire. Hermes is also looking for 9,000 self-employed drivers who can become ‘self-employed-plus’ drivers with guaranteed holiday pay.

The first £30 million of the investment is taking place right now ahead of the peak season.

The company is adding 90 new sub-depots, new vehicles and customer service technology. In the coming Black Friday and Christmas periods it expects volumes to hit 3.5 million pieces a day – almost double that of 2019’s peak season.

Martijn de Lange, CEO at Hermes UK, said: “The pandemic has expedited the already phenomenal growth of online shopping and we see no sign of this changing. As a result, it is important that we have the right infrastructure and people in place to support this.

“This is good news for the many people who have sadly had their income affected and we are pleased to be able to support the UK economy with so many jobs at this time.”
