How The Courier Guy Scaled South Africa’s Largest Parcel Locker Network
As out-of-home (OOH) delivery continues to expand globally, operators are increasingly looking for infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale parcel locker networks in challenging operating environments. One such example comes from South Africa, where The Courier Guy has rapidly expanded its locker network using infrastructure developed by Rovenma.
Since the first deployment in May 2025, 1,200 RovLocker R7 battery-powered parcel lockers have been installed across South Africa, complementing the existing network of approximately 1,200 grid-powered lockers already in operation. Together, these form a hybrid infrastructure capable of operating both on-grid and off-grid. The network now processes over 60,000 parcel transactions every day and supports more than 16 million parcel delivery cycles annually. It is now the country’s largest and fastest-growing locker network — and is set to surpass 3,000 points before the end of the year.
Operating a national locker network in South Africa presents a unique combination of challenges, including security risks, power infrastructure limitations, inconsistent mobile connectivity, and the operational complexity of servicing geographically dispersed locations. Unlike many European markets, successful nationwide deployment requires infrastructure capable of operating reliably despite unreliable power availability, varying mobile network coverage, and elevated physical security risks. Rather than focusing solely on hardware features, the project was designed around long-term operational resilience and scalability.
The success of the project is built on the combination of The Courier Guy’s operational excellence and Rovenma’s infrastructure specifically engineered for demanding environments. The RovLocker R7 incorporates Rovenma’s patented locking technology, designed for durability, corrosion resistance, and long-term reliability. Its vandal-resistant architecture, protected cameras, tamper-resistant construction, and secure enclosure provide resilience in public environments where attempted break-ins are an ongoing reality. Battery-powered operation enables deployment without relying on permanent electrical infrastructure, while dual-SIM connectivity across different mobile operators, together with site-specific antenna configurations, helps maintain reliable communication even in areas with poor network coverage. Combined with its front-access maintenance architecture, these features support large-scale network growth while minimizing operational complexity.
Software resilience is equally important. Temporary connectivity interruptions do not prevent customers from collecting or depositing parcels, as the lockers continue operating in offline mode and automatically synchronize transaction data once the
connection is restored. Together with strong cybersecurity practices and the platform’s robust hardware design, this ensures reliable day-to-day operation even in demanding public environments.
