DHL USA delivers the spirit of the holiday season to U.S. troops in the Middle East

DHL is partnering with local communities in New York and Southern California to deliver live holiday trees and decorations to U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East through DHL’s annual Trees for Troops charitable program. Since 2004, DHL’s Trees for Troops program has collected and shipped thousands of holiday trees, lights, ornaments, menorahs and messages of support to the brave men and women serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain and Kuwait.

This year, local businesses, organizations, private citizens and nurseries on the east and west coasts of the country will join forces with DHL in donating and delivering 750 trees and holiday decorations overseas. DHL will host official send-off events for this year’s Trees for Troops shipments on December 3rd in New York and on December 7th in Riverside, Calif.

DHL launched its annual Trees for Troops program in December 2004, when Jim Adelis, a New York businessman whose son was stationed in Iraq at the time, reached out to DHL to assist in transporting a shipment of trees to the Middle East. In November and December 2004, with the help of the U.S. Army Reserve 77th Regional Readiness Command, Dee’s Nursery and the local New York metro community, DHL delivered two shipments featuring a total of 135 trees and holiday decorations from JFK to troops stationed at Camp Anaconda in Balad, Iraq.

DHL was the first international air express carrier to provide service to Iraq and Afghanistan following the lifting of sanctions and operates the most extensive logistics service into these countries. DHL announced the start of operations to Afghanistan in March 2002 and Iraq in March 2003.

DHL and Fedex providing service in Iraq

Two of the world’s biggest express transport companies, FedEx and DHL, opened in Iraq months after Saddam Hussein’s regime fell. DHL began operations here in May 2003, and FedEx followed in August of that year.

Both companies serve much of Iraq with drop-off locations in most major cities, and home or office delivery.

Much of their business comes from international shipments in and out of U.S. military bases in Iraq, but drivers make local deliveries as well.

Ahmad Mahmoud, a contractor who runs FedEx’s small desk in a central Baghdad hotel, says he or one of the local FedEx drivers tries to deliver most packages to people’s homes or offices, but they won’t go to certain neighborhoods.

According to FedEx’s website, the Memphis-based company relies on Falcon Express, a cargo carrier, to fly packages into Iraq as well as to other Middle Eastern countries such as Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

FedEx boasts 33 pickup locations in Iraq, about half of them at U.S. bases, according to its website, which also lists Iraq’s import prohibitions on liquor, jewelry, political material, vitamins, Viagra and other items.

DHL has 13 package drop-off sites throughout Iraq, mostly at airports, according to its website.

Kuwait Minister: No Plan to privatize postal sector soon

Minister of Communications and Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs Sharida Al-Moasherji has refuted reports that the postal sector will be privatized soon.

Indicating that it is too early to talk about the issue as no law to that effect has been approved yet, Al-Moasherji said, “the postal sector in Kuwait is in a very pathetic condition and needs drastic improvement.” A French team specialized in the postal sector will visit Kuwait to study the problems and will offer recommendations to develop the sector and its workforce, he noted.

Meanwhile, MP Adel Al-Sarawi has accused government of not being serious about establishing a Public Authority for Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE) and hinted that it is under pressure to give up the idea, reports Al-Qabas daily. Speaking at a press conference, Al-Sarawi said government has been delaying in submitting the draft law to parliament and though the Parliamentary Committee for Finance and Economic Affairs would have finished studying the project by Monday, the government did not submit anything related to the project yet.
