Market of postal and courier services of Lithuania up 21.8 pct in 2008

According to the preliminary data of the Communications Regulatory Authority, over January-June of 2008, the Lithuanian market of postal and courier services reached 126.7 million litas (37.94 million euros), an increase of 21.8 pct year-on-year (104.0 million litas/ 37.946 million euros).

The market of postal services according to the received revenues increased 13.3 pct – up to 47.7 million litas (14.299 million euros); the market of courier services went up by 27.7 pct and amounted to 78.9 million litas (23.64 million euros).

Migrant workers prompt postal boom

The large number of migrants from Lithuania working overseas are responsible for a boom in the country’s postal service, Lietuvos Paštas has confirmed.

Since Lithuania became a member of the European Union, the amount of international letters, postcards, and small parcels has grown hugely, with the most traffic coming from Great Britain, Ireland and Spain, where the majority of Lithuanian currently live and work.

By the end of 2006 the amount of outgoing mail correspondence to Great Britain had increased by more than 220 percent and stood at 96.13 tons per year, accounting for more than a quarter of outgoing correspondence, and the amount of incoming mail had improved by 25 percent to 60.1 tons per year.

Last year, the volume of outgoing parcels to Ireland had increased by 39 percent to 23.9 percent, the amount of incoming parcels from Ireland had gone up by 18 percent to 12.9 tons.

Communication with Lithuanians in Spain is livelier than ever, as well. In 2006, the amount of mail sent from Spain to Lithuania was as much as 23 times greater than in 2004 (6.6 tons), and the volume of outgoing correspondence to Spain had risen by 26.1 percent to 5.86 tons.

In 2006, the Lithuanian post office delivered 5.9 million items or 457.25 tons of foreign mail to addresses in Lithuania, and the amount of outgoing mail from Lithuania stood at 4.73 million items or 369.1 tons.

Lithuanian Post fined EUR 23,188 for abuse of market dominance

Lithuania’s competition watchdog has imposed on Lietuvos Pastas (Lithuanian Post), the state-run postal service operator, a fine of 80,000 litas (EUR 23,188) for abuse of its dominance on the domestic market. Having considered the conclusions drawn by the investigation into the compliance of Lietuvos Pastas with the requirements of competition legislation, the Competition Council has ruled that the company has breached the article on the abuse of market dominance. The council has set out its opinion that Lietuvos Pastas has abused its dominance on the market of reserved postal services and sought to drive its competitors out from the bill printing, folding and enveloping market.

Lithuania Post to be turned into private limited company

The Lithuanian parliament has passed a law to transform the state enterprise Lietuvos Pastas (Lithuanian Post) into a public limited company, 100 percent owned by the state.

The postal operator will be put on the list of enterprises of strategic importance to the national security after its conversion into a public limited company.
