UPS taps Manila freight carrier

United Parcel Service (UPS) says its agreement with Pacific East Asia Air Cargo Airlines (Peac) to fly between Hong Kong and the Philippines is only a temporary measure until UPS can get its own beyond rights from the SAR.
UPS signed the agreement with Peac, a sister company to Philippine Airlines under the control of controversial tycoon Lucio Tan, before opening its intra-Asia hub at the former Clark Air Base in Pampanga in April.
The agreement calls for the Philippine carrier to operate an Airbus Industrie A300 freighter for UPS six times a week, Monday to Saturday, between Clark and Hong Kong.

UPS opens Asia hub in Philippines

UPS opened its intra-Asia air hub in the Philippines, a
central sorting point within four hours from major Asian
cities.

The intra-Asia hub opens one year after UPS began direct
flight service between the United States and China. That
service has exceeded the company’s expectations for revenue,
volume and profitability, UPS stated.

Located at the former Clark United States Air Force Base near
the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport, UPS can use a
23,000-square-foot hub.

Recent studies by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
project a 7-to-18 percent increase in air cargo traffic in
Southeast Asia over the next 20 years.

Snail mail still tops in The Philippines

Despite the advent of modern technology and the proliferation of private letter couriers, the Philippine Postal Corp. (PPC) still controls up to 90% of the mail delivery business.
Frendy Gerona, PPC Southern Mindanao information officer, said there is no substitute to public courier service, since it covers the widest reach. “We can even deliver in the middle of Mt. Apo if there’s a community there,” he said, adding that some private courier services are still relying on the PPC in delivering the mails and packages of their clients to hinterland communities.
