Pos Malaysia Q1 net profit rises 91.5percent

Pos Malaysia & Services Holdings Bhd surprised with a surge in pre-tax profit to RM38.1mil for the first quarter ended March 31 from RM18.9mil in the equivalent period of 2003. Net profit rose 91.5percent to RM25.8mil in the first quarter, compared with RM13.5mil in the corresponding quarter last year, while revenue increased 6.6percent to RM175.3mil.

Pos Malaysia to invest 80-90 Mln Rgt on upgrading

Pos Malaysia & Services Holdings Bhd will invest 80-90 mln rgt this year to improve its services by upgrading equipment and revamping its post offices, The Star newspaper reported, citing acting Chief Executive Officer S M Haja Alawdin S Md Sulaiman.

Pos Malaysia has 646 outlets throughout the country and it plans to first revamp some 50 post offices, he said.

Mail volume & demand for postal services keep growing in Malaysia

Contrary to popular opinion, the volume of mail has not gone down since the advent of the fax, e-mail and SMS. Rather, Pos Malaysia is seeing a growth of between three and five per cent every year. According to Pos Malaysia CEO S.M. Haja Alawdin S. Md. Sulaiman, Pos Malaysia handles 1.12 billion items a year, accounting for 3.5 million items a day.

Direct mail from east coast states to Thai districts

Mail from east coast states like Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang destined for districts in southern Thailand will no longer pass through Kuala Lumpur once a new arrangement is worked out with the Thai postal authorities.

According to SM Haja Alawdin Md Sulaiman, senior general manager (II) for Pos Malaysia’s business and support services, such mail will instead be transported by land through Kelantan’s Rantau Panjang, and then onto the Golok town on the Thai side for distribution to districts like Yala, Narathiwat and Patani.
